• Dear Roosevelt Family,

         I am one of your Elementary School Social Workers. I am posted at Washington Rose Elementary School on the first floor of the building in Room 1029. My name is Laurie Buelvas-Kritas, I am half- Salvadoran and half- Colombian, a bilingual Spanish-speaker since birth. I have a lovely family with two teenage children. My husband is a high school English teacher. I am very grateful for my blessed Salvadoran mother and family who struggled with hardships to get me through Stuyvesant High School, Binghamton University, the Harvard School of Education and Colombia University School of Social Work. I have degrees in Sociology, Latin American Studies, Women’s Studies, Education and Social Work. I have several licenses to practice in New York State mental health services and in education. I have proudly served Long Island families of all backgrounds at Peninsula Counseling Center as a psychotherapist and also worked at North Shore Child and Family Guidance in the Hurricane Sandy relief effort. In 1991, I got my start working with African American families in Harlem, where I provided residential counseling services before getting my first graduate degree. It was a transformative experience which helped set me on the path of providing high quality psychotherapeutic and social emotional services to underserved communities. I began working in schools in 2001, the year of 9/11 and I helped students and families manage a variety of personal crises in the aftermath. For 25 years, I have been blessed and honored to spread the amazing grace I learned from patients and clients over the years of crisis counseling and child and family therapy. I aspire to include as many helpful resources on this web page as possible for Roosevelt families, staff members and students.
